Roccat KAIN 120 AIMO MouseRoccat is back on the blog with some new cool products. In this review we have to look at their Roccat Kain 120 AIMO gaming mouse.
Let's start with an introduction movie Roccat made a little video for us. Then you can get a little understanding of what's new about this mouse. New design has been made in connection with the buttons, which should make them better, and faster to activate.
We'd better get a look at the technical specifications. The Roccat Kain 120 is built around their 16000 DPI Owl-Eye sensor from PixArt, which provides incredibly high precision. Along with an ARM processor, built-in memory and Omron contacts, you have a really solid base for a good mouse.
What's in the box. The box itself is printed with nice photo-realistic illustrations and technical specifications on the outside.
Inside the box we find the mouse itself, and some promotional material as well as a user guide. It is the same guide for both Kain 120 and 122.
A closer look at the mouse. If we look at the mouse from the front or the top we can see that it is a pretty nice standard ergonomic FPS mouse. At the top we have a dedicated DPI button, and then there are the two buttons for the fingers as well as the scroll wheel.
At the back of the mouse we find a nice and sharp Roccat logo, which has its own light zone. The surface of the mouse is rubbery, like the well-known soft-touch material we know so well.
On the left side of the mouse we find a couple of good and rather large thumb buttons. They are well positioned relative to the thumb when using palm grip, which is the most commonly used grip among FPS players.
Below the mouse we find a couple of good sliding pads that allow the mouse to move smoothly over most surfaces. The sensor does not have as big a hole as you would expect when you hear the number 16000 DPI, but obviously no more is needed.
At the end of the cable we find a nice USB connector, which has printed the product name. Then you have no doubt which connector you pull out of the computer. The cable is a fairly flexible fabric cable, which is quite nice. It should be as soft as possible.
The Software Roccat Swarm. Roccat Swarm is a fairly competent software that allows you to manage all your Roccat products from the same place. On the first tab you can save all the windows you use regularly. Then you do not have to browse through the software to find the right settings that you adjust regularly.
The 'Settings' tab has the basic technical settings like the DPI settings and various standard Windows speeds like Scroll and double click.
On the 'Assign button' tab you can give the buttons various functions. The possibilities here are virtually endless, and you can assign the buttons anything from keyboard shortcuts to advanced macros.
The 'Enlightenment' tab is a little obvious. This is where you control the light in the mouse and you can control it all yourself, or let the AIMO system control it for you. AIMO allows the light to be adjusted according to how you use your Roccat devices. There are two light zones on the mouse, the logo on the back and the scroll wheel in front. The brightness is quite high, so personally I run with brightness of 25%, otherwise it will be too powerful for me.
On the last tab 'Advanced settings' we find the technical settings. This is where you can customize the mouse to the surface, set update frequencies and several other deep features. This allows you to personalize the mouse to your own needs.
It's time to describe the mouse in-use. The Roccat Kain 120 is made for the FPS player, who wants a good ergonomic mouse to play with. Daily use. I already use an FPS mouse for daily use, which is also intended for palm grip. So the use of this mouse is not unfamiliar to me, and therefore falls naturally. All buttons sit properly on this mouse and have a custom size. The surface allows the mouse to be easily lifted from the surface to correct the mouse. Gaming. Roccat has done a lot to redesign the mouse buttons. It makes you get some very accurate and fast clicks, which is really important when playing. Especially when you think about eye-to-hand responsiveness, it's important to have a short click distance. This mouse is really good and fast for gaming. Ergonomics. Roccat Kain 120 AIMO has a god size for an adult hand. This means that the hand rests well on the mouse and therefore you do not strain either hand, fingers or wrist when using it. Again, the surface also makes it easy to lift the mouse and correct it on the surface, as you often do during FPS games. Even here you do not strain your fingers, as you do not have to squeeze too much. Quality. Roccat generally makes good quality products, and so is this mouse. There is nothing that seems loose and rattled, but everything seems solid and good. The cable is a bit stiff, which is unfortunately not unormal in mouse cables, but something I don't quite understand. You can make soft cables for headsets, but not for mice? Light. The light in the mouse is divided into 2 zones, so you can control the light in the scroll wheel and the logo independently. It allows you to put your own personal touch on the mouse.
If you want to use Roccat AIMO, the light is controlled automatically, depending on how you use the mouse and the other Roccat devices in the computer. The light can actually become so powerful that it almost blinds you, especially in the evening. Personally, I had to turn down the brightness a lot so it was comfortable to sit by the mouse.
What is my rating then. The Roccat Kain 120 AIMO is a great FPS mouse that has the right size and is built in a good quality. The surface of the mouse is good, as you easily get a good grip on the mouse and it does not slip between the fingers. This makes it easy and effortless to lift the mouse from the surface to correct the position. The Roccat Kain 120 AIMO buttons have been redesigned to be completely independent of the body itself. It makes them easier and faster to activate, which is good for gaming. If you use more Roccat products, Roccat Swarm is a great software. It covers all products that need a driver, and it ensures that your products are always up to date with the latest firmware. Price. Roccat Kain 120 AIMO costs around DKK 500 at the time of writing. That's a pretty good price for such a mouse. There is no doubt that you have a mouse for a long time when you buy this one. Overall assessment. Roccat Cain 120 AIMO is a good and competent mouse. It is good to use and built in really good quality. Roccat Swarm keeps your products and drivers up-to-date, so you don't have to think about that anymore. The price for the mouse is quite appropriate as you get a good quality mouse with lots of features to meet most needs. Overall it gives a nice GOLD rating since you don't have to look for another FPS mouse for a long time. Read more about Roccat Kain 120 AIMO here: |
