SanDisk X400 - 256GB M.2 SSDThen it's time for the first review of the year. I have purchased a small SSD for my setup, and thought I might as well do a little review of it. It is a SanDisk X400 SSD M.2 I bought, as I have purchased a motherboard with M.2 option. I bought the SSD based on price and performance.
SanDisk makes all types of memory from the small SD card for SSD disks and more. They have been on the market for many years, and constantly developed their range and kept up with the latest technology.
Specifications: As you can see in the specifications, there can be expected some pretty good read and to write speeds of this series of discs. I will make a test in a moment, and compare with some other discs I have lying.
A few pictures: The SSD I received was in a small blister package, so there was not much unpacking fun in that.
A M.2 disc is not very large in physical size. There are several different lengths, but the width is typically the same. There are of course some standards which you can read about on Wikipedia. This disc is made in the standard 2280, which defines the width of 22mm and length of 80mm. It is single sided, making it extremely thin, as little as 1.5 mm.
Furthermore I have tried to shoot a short film where I tell a little about my first M.2 SSD experience.
Benchmarks: I have created benchmarks of the new disk and the other disks I have in my computer. In this case a Samsung 840 and a raid with 2 x Western Digital Black discs. The measurements in the benchmark pictures speaks a little of themselves. The new disk is significantly faster than the others, however, my Samsung SSD shows good results when it comes to reading, but not writing.
My opinion: I'm actually really happy with this new disc. It performs very well and is indeed much better than what I already had. Perhaps I expected a bit more speed on reading compared to my Samsung disk. I should not complain, as my computer now boots in about 5 seconds. So all in all a good upgrade and I love that you do not need any cables anymore, but just connecting the new drive directly down on the motherboard. I choose NOT to rate this product since I do not have the comparison basis. But certainly think that it's a great little disk, and it performs very well.
